Who are the Knights

The Knights of Columbus is the world's largest Catholic family fraternal service organization with 1.6 million members. It provides members and their families with volunteer opportunities in service to the Catholic Church, their communities, families and young people.  In 2005 our first European Council was started in Poland.

The K of C gave $2.5 Million to those affected by Hurricane Katrina and was the FIRST to pay out over $1 million in immediate support to the families of victims of 911.

Nationally, the K of C was responsible for putting the phrase “under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance and they continue to commit millions of dollars to overturn the pro-abortion mentality and defend the right to life.

The K of C staunchly supports  Priests and the Ten Commandments, through our Refund Support Vocations Program, the K of C  contributes to the thousands of seminarians and postulants, both in our archdiocese and abroad

Membership Benefits

As a member of the Knights of Columbus you and your family enjoy many benefits, including 12 free issues annually of the Columbia magazine, the world's largest Catholic family magazine, eligibility to join the Knights of Columbus top-ranked life insurance program, and many more family and personal benefits.

When our organization began in 1882, in order to help each other, our members "passed the hat" to assist families of deceased members. Soon, however, this became impossible, as the number of our members grew.

Out of this simple process, we've evolved into a modern, dynamic insurance organization, and offer a wide variety of products to suit virtually everyone's needs.

Permanent Plans - Policy lasts as long as you live, premium stays the same.
Term Plans - Policy ends at end of specified term: renewable or convertible.
Annuities - Provides an income that is guaranteed for life.
Long Term Care - Provides funds for long-term, out-of-hospital care.

A special benefit is the support of Seminarians. For the past 3 years Council 3369 has had the awesome pleasure of supporting a seminarian, who along with his dad and brother, are members of our Knights council.

Brother Gabriel Lewis ( shown left with his dad ) has completed his two year novitiate at  the Legionaries of Christ Seminary in Cheshire, CT. He took his first profession of vows in September of 2006 and entered his third year of Humanities. Then in August 2007 he was sent to the Legionaries of Christ Seminary in Rome to study Philosophy where he will live until 2009. Gabe, who grew up a member of the St. Columbkille Parish, is the son of member Bud and Margo Lewis.

Previously we supported a great friend and former parishioner, Fr. Patrick McMullen ( shown left ). As a Seminarian and Deacon, Patrick  attended the Mount St. Mary's Seminary of the Athenaeum of Ohio, where he finished his studies and finals and was ordained a Priest on May 20, 2006 . Fr. Patrick, who grew up a member of Holy Name (Chapel), is a Fourth Degree Knight and the son of the late Brother Knight James T. (Jim) and Margaret Ann (Peg) McMullen.

He celebrated his first 'home parish' Mass at St. Columbkille Holy Name Chapel on Sunday, June 11, 2006 for the 150 plus family, friends and parishioners that gathered to honor him and wish him well. Since July 1, 2006 Fr. Pat serves as Associate Pastor at Holy Angels Parish in Sidney, Ohio. Members enjoy the use of St. Columbkille Church Basement (undercroft) as our home where we meet, hold activities and have our office. Making new friendships and deepening and promoting the Catholic Faith through community and church involvement such teaching in Parish School of Religion, participating in lay ministries at church, providing free labor for projects at church, Habitat for Humanity, and providing leadership for the Boy Scouts of America.

For the Unexpected

We're all getting older. Record numbers of people are living well into their 80s, 90s...and even past the age of 100. That translates into more time to do the things you want to do, to spend time with the people you love. It also poses new challenges.

In aging, you change in some familiar ways - and some ways that might be completely unexpected. In your 60's and 70s, tasks and activities that you once performed routinely or with ease might become increasingly difficult. And, over time, you may need more and more assistance with such activities. You might also experience a sudden, acute need for such help after a debilitating illness - such as stroke.

One recent national survey found that among people who turned 65 in 1990, 47 percent could expect to spend three months or more in a nursing home before they die. About one in four will spend more than one year there.1 On average, nursing home care can cost upwards of $61,000 per year.2 You may be able to manage with at-home nursing care. Yet this option, too can be quite expensive: on average, such services cost over $53,000 per year in the U.S.3 for eight hours of service, 365 days a year.

These figures can be expected to increase over time. As you grow older, the risk that you will need care increases. Since people on average are living longer, all of us face an increased likelihood that we'll be candidates for care services.

How to Join

Membership in the Knights of Columbus is open to practicing Catholic men in union with the Holy See, who are at least 18 years old. A practicing Catholic is one who lives up to the Commandments of God and the precepts of the Church. Application blanks are available from any member of the Knights of Columbus.

Fr. O'Donoghue has it's own membership team responsible for conducting the First Degree initiation ceremonies so our candidates don't have to travel to another city to join the K of C.

Certain members of the Fourth Degree serve as honor guards at civic and religious functions, an activity that has brought worldwide recognition to the Knights of Columbus.
